Google Home Hub vs. Amazon Echo Show (2nd Gen)

Smart assistants are the closest things we have to robot butlers, and our houses are filled with them. Thanks to several hundred hours of testing, we're able to help you pick out the best experiences for your home.

Google Home Hub

Pros

  • Stunning display
  • Impressively compact
  • Excellent touch features
  • Superior voice commands

Cons

  • Not quite loud enough for a noisy kitchen

Google's Home Hub is the first smart display I've wanted to put in other rooms in my home. The software is especially good when it comes to swiping through the menus, something you don't see much with smart displays.

Amazon Echo Show (2nd Gen)

Pros

  • Easily the best speaker on a smart display today
  • Large, vibrant display
  • Consistent Alexa experience

Cons

  • Alexa command system isn't particularly intuitive
  • Display doesn't do much yet

A huge upgrade from the original Echo Show, especially when it comes to the impressive new speakers. But unless you're watching a video or you want to see lyrics to a song you're streaming, the Echo Show display doesn't really enhance Alexa too much right now.

These experiences aren't all that different when it comes to day-to-day tasks, but the amount of work you need to do in order to get those experiences matters. This is especially true when it comes to making sure your assistant actually learns from your behaviors.

Defining "smart" in your display

Google and Amazon hope that, by purchasing one of these smart displays, you'll be hooked into that ecosystem for a long time. These smart displays are designed to be your hub for all of the other things on the network first, and entertainment devices second. That's why these displays are so commonly found in kitchens and living rooms, the whole point is to make sure you're able to either speak or reach out and touch these things when you are at your busiest, but make it clear what you really want is an inexpensive way to make it so Google or Alexa can hear you no matter where you are.

The good news for Google and Amazon is, for a certain group of people, this plan is working. What is particularly interesting about this plan is how differently these two companies are approaching that "hub" experience through hardware and software.

Google Home Hub Amazon Echo Show (2nd Gen)
Display 7-inch LCD 10.1-inch LCD
Speaker 15W 2 x 10W and Dolby processing
Ambient light sensor ✅ ❌
Connectivity 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac MIMO 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac + 802.15.4
Power 15W Adapter 30W Adapter
Camera ❌ 5MP

Amazon's Echo Show is a clear winner if you want a kitchen appliance. It's way louder, the display is larger, and it is designed to take up a fair bit of space. Google Home Hub doesn't do super well in the kitchen because it's easy to cover up the comparably small display and the speakers aren't as good. But just about any other room in the house, the Home Hub is going to offer a much better experience. It's a fantastic living room photo frame until you need it for smart home things, a fantastic bedside clock that transforms into a full assistant when you need it, and a decent office display for when you want to watch a little something while you work. I wouldn't want the Echo Show in any of these places, because the display is distracting even when it is dim and the camera on the front causes some privacy concerns with Drop In enabled. You can disable that instant calling feature, but in the kitchen I really like it.

Unfortunately, the biggest differences between these two smart displays exist because of petty dividing lines in ecosystems.

A big part of what makes the Google Home Hub really stand out is the display. This compact design houses and incredibly well tuned display with an ambient light sensor to help it sort of fade into the background when not in use. As a digital photo frame, it's fantastic because most of the time it really looks like a photo in a frame. Amazon's Echo Show, by comparison, always looks like a little TV and demands your attention as you walk through a room. This is useful in some places in the house, but not all of them.

Unfortunately, the biggest differences between these two smart displays exist because of petty dividing lines in ecosystems. Amazon's streaming services can't be sent to a Home Hub via Google Cast, and Google's streaming services for music and video are painful to get working on an Echo Show by design. These companies intentionally screw one another over so you're compelled to use one over the other entirely. But even without those dividing lines, there are things Google Home Hub does much better when it comes to entertainment. If I say "Hey Google, play the next episode of Game of Thrones" it knows to check and see what episode I wanted last and play the next one. Ask an Echo Show to do the same for The Man in the High Castle on Amazon Instant Video, and nothing happens.

The software differences between Google and Amazon don't end there. Home Hub does a better job making it so you can quickly look at individual rooms in your home for smart hub controls, and allows you to run it all by touch as well as voice. This is particularly helpful when your Home Hub is your bedside screen, as you can control things like the thermostat without waking up the other person in bed with you.

Honor Magic 2 has six cameras and a slide-up design, available November 6

There's also a new Honor Watch coming out in January.

During IFA this past August, Honor gave us a sneak peek at its Honor Magic 2 flagship smartphone. At an event held in Beijing today, the Magic 2 was fully unveiled alongside a new smartwatch that's debuting next year.

Similar to the Oppo Find X, the Honor Magic 2 has a slide-up design in which the front-facing cameras and other sensors pop out above the 6.39-inch AMOLED display when you want to use them. This allows the Magic 2 to have "an almost 100% screen-to-body ratio" with no notch in sight, and the result is really quite beautiful.

Powering the Magic 2 is Huawei's Kirin 980 processor that provides snappy day-to-day performance and "high-performance AI-computation processing power." Just like the original Honor Magic, the presence of artificial intelligence is being heavily marketed with its successor. The Magic 2 ships with its own AI called YOYO that Honor describes as follows:

YOYO is an all-in-one smart-living enabler that continues to learn and progress over time. YOYO's capabilities surpass that of an ordinary virtual voice assistant, and can identify, learn, think and improve. YOYO further redefines human-AI interaction to deliver an unparalleled and, scenario-based user experience that makes Honor Magic2 the smartest AI phone available on the market.

The cameras are also a big deal with the Magic 2. Around back you'll find a 16MP + 24MP + 16MP combo while the front is home to a 16MP + 2MP + 2MP setup. Also included with the Honor Magic 2 is 40W fast-charging, in-display fingerprint sensor, and the world's first dual-SIM + dual VoLTE configuration.

Also announced is a new smartwatch called the Honor Watch. This is Honor's first flagship smartwatch, and it's outfitted with a 1.2-inch circular AMOLED display, up to 7 days of battery life, and two physical buttons on its side.

Although the Honor Watch won't be available until January 2019, the Honor Magic 2 is available for pre-order now and will officially go on sale November 6.

OPPO Find X review: A beautiful disaster

What’s the best place to buy the RED Hydrogen One?

Best answer: You can buy the Hydrogen One from AT&T, Verizon, or unlocked directly from RED, but only AT&T offers a bundle with two free movies optimized for 4V playback.

AT&T: RED Hydrogen One ($1295)

Carrier support

If you're a cinema aficionado who just can't resist the temptation of the RED brand name, the Hydrogen One is finally available to purchase starting this Friday, November 2nd. At a whopping $1295, it's certainly not cheap, but it's the most affordable RED product yet, save for a few camera accessories like cables and batteries.

Both Verizon and AT&T will be carrying the Hydrogen One, offering different payment plans to make the phone easier to walk out with. Of course, you'll still end up paying the full $1295 over time regardless, but Verizon has 24-month financing for $53.95 per month. AT&T, on the other hand, will let you get away with $43.17 a month, but the financing period is stretched out to 30 months.

To help ease the blow, AT&T is offering free downloads of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and Ready Player One to the first 10,000 people who buy a Hydrogen One on its network. Available in the Hydrogen Network, these movies are optimized for RED's Holographic 4-View display technology. Unfortunately, Verizon isn't offering any kind of bundled bonus content with the Hydrogen One at the moment.

Buying unlocked

If you don't mind handing over the full $1295 up front — or if you'd rather wait it out and snag the elusive titanium model for an even higher price of $1595 — you can buy the Hydrogen One directly from RED's site. While you won't get Fantastic Beasts or Ready Player One, you do get an unlocked model that's free of any carrier bloatware … and of course, you avoid piling more costs onto your monthly phone bill.

Our pick

RED Hydrogen One

$1295 at AT&T $1295 at Verizon

Squeeze every bit of value you can out of this high-dollar phone.

If you're going to buy the Hydrogen One, you'll get the most value out of AT&T's H4V movie bundle, but if that's not important to you or you're on a different carrier, you can buy it from Verizon or unlocked directly from RED.

This $389 Wen 2000-watt inverter generator produces power without the noise

Includes a USB port for staying charged in the wild.

The Wen 56200i 2000-Watt 79.7cc Inverter Generator is down to $389.18 on Amazon. This generator has been selling for around $445 over the last couple months. The price drop today is a match for the best we've seen on Amazon, although there was a deal dropping it to $380 on Newegg back in August. It is currently around $445 or higher at Newegg and Home Depot.

The generator uses fuel in its 79.7cc 4-stroke engine to create clean, efficient, portable power. It only generates 51 decibels of noise, which is relatively quiet compared to a more traditional generator. That's important if you want to use this around other people like at campgrounds or tailgates. There are two three-pong 120V outlets, one 12V DC receptable, and one 5V USB port so you can charge your phone, computer, or other electronics. It has 4.5 stars based on 535 reviews at Amazon. You'll also receive a two-year warranty with its purchase.

LG might announce a foldable smartphone at CES 2019

This won't be LG's first foray into foldable phones.

Even though we're just about to start November, CES 2019 will be here before you know it. That means a ton of announcements for new phones, smart home gadgets, and plenty more. Among all of the big reveals, it's now reported that LG will use the show to unveil its latest foldable smartphone.

Reliable tipster Evan Blass recently shared the following on Twitter:

We don't have any further details on what the foldable phone will look like, cost, or where it'll be released, but at the very least, we have something already to look forward to.

Foldable phones are likely going to be one of the bigger trends next year, but don't forget that this won't be LG's first foray into this tech. The company's first folding phone, the G Flex, announced in 2013 with a curved body that could be bent without breaking. That was later followed up in 2015 with the G Flex 2, but that was the last time LG messed with its foldable/bendable design.

What are you hoping to see from LG's next foldable phone?
