One of the most celebrated indie games developed and released in the past five years is Cuphead, a devilishly hard platformer that tries to be a 1930s cartoon fever dream come to life. I'm a huge Cuphead fan, and am always excited to find games following in Studio MDHR's tradition of mixing hand-drawn art with fun endless runner gameplay mechanics. This week, I'm highlighting a game that borrows the Cuphead aesthetic to create an endless running experience that also plays out like a cartoon. Allow me to introduce you to Take Flight!
Created by indie studio Waffle Games with a two-person team that consisted of the game developer and an artist who supplied all the gorgeous artwork that makes the game come alive.
The game has you choose between two pilots, Buddie Boy and Bonnie Boo, as they attempt to fly as far as possible collecting golden gears and dodging enemies along the way. The controls are dead simple as you tap and hold to fly up and let go to descend — Flappy Bird anyone?
Power-ups randomly show up as you play and instantly go into effect when you hit them. You start out with a machine gun that lets you shoot back for a short time, a magnet that automatically collects gears for you, and a shield that lets you take an extra hit from an enemy. There's also a boost power up and others to unlock, but you're only able to load up three before each play-through which adds to the strategy.
My only gripe about this game is that it looks like Cuphead, but lacks the unrelenting difficulty that made that game so infamous. By comparison, Take Flight! at times feels a bit too easy for its own good. On one hand, that's smart for a casual game aiming for a wide audience but for hardcore fans of Cuphead, it's worth noting.
This is a free-to-play game with simple controls, non-intrusive ads, and in-app purchases that aren't tied to pay to win tactics but instead help you directly support the developers — you've got to appreciate that!
